La [[Wirt]] è stata fondata nel [[1884]], e per circa due decadi è stata il maggior produttore mondiale di penne stilografiche, superando abbondantemente le produzioni effettuate nello stesso periodo dalle ben più note [[Waterman]] e [[Parker]]. Nel periodo iniziale dello sviluppo della penna stilografica l'azienda infatti è stata all'avanguardia, in particolare nel campo degli alimentatori.

His son, who was taking over from his father in running the business, died in 1921, and only after four years ''Paul E. Wirt'' went out of business by selling the company.
