Alcune parti sono presenti da sempre in ogni penna stilografica: l'insieme del pennino e dell'alimentatore (detto gruppo pennino), la sezione (la parte finale della penna che tiene insieme pennino ed alimentatore), il corpo della penna, che fa le veci o contiene il serbatoio, ed il cappuccio (assente solo sui cosiddetti [[stiloforo|stilofori]], vale a dire le penne da tavolo).
