Il marchio ''Blackbird'' venne introdotto dalla [[Swan]] prima del 1914,<ref>non è nota una datazione precisa, si fa riferimento a questa data che è citata in [https://www.penexchange.de/forum_en/viewtopic.php?t=6332 questo articolo] in cui si dice che la più vecchia ritrovata (con [[caricamento a caduta]]) è precedente a questo, che è l'anno della fondazione della ''"Mabie Todd and Co. Limited"''.</ref> per contraddistinguere la sua produzione economica. Le penne, oltre che dal nome, erano contraddistinte, come le versioni del marchio principale, dal logo stilizzato dell'uccello da cui derivano il nome (nel caso il merlo).
