Nel [[1916]] la [[Conklin]] introdusse una innovativa clip a molla, capace di allargarsi senza sforzi, che per la sua semplicità ed eleganza viene anche oggi riproposta da aziende moderne come la Visconti, l'unico brevetto ritrovato però ({{Cite patent|US|1267575}}) risulta richiesto nel [[1917]]. Le vendite di penne, pur declinando, rimanevano ai vertici del mercato, ed i modelli incominciavano ad essere considerati un po' datati.
