La ''Dunn'' venne fondata a New York nel [[1921]] con sede al 300 di Madison Avenue, ma fra i suoi fondatori non figura direttamente ''Charles Dunn'', l'inventore da cui prende il nome l'azienda, che pare sia morto di tubercolosi poco prima della fondazione della stessa. Questi aveva creato e brevettato nel [[1920]] (brevetto {{Cite patent|US|1359880}}) un originale sistema di [[stantuffo tuffante|caricamento a pompa]], sostanzialmente identico allo [[stantuffo tuffante]] della [[OMAS]]. Il nuovo sistema di caricamento consentiva di immagazzinare una grande capacità di inchiostro, tanto che uno degli slogan adottati per lanciare sul mercato il modello [[Camel Tatler]] era: ''"A regular camel for ink, goes a month without a drink"''.
