La ''Astoria'' venne fondata nel [[1921]] ad Amburgo da ''Georg Ilgner'', che fino ad allora era stato il direttore della produzione della [[Montblanc]]. Questi, con il supporto finanziario di Herman Dietzel, Sigmund Popper e Wilhelm Frings lasciò la [[Montblanc]] per mettersi in proprio. La ''Astoria'' iniziò a produrre penne [[Astoria Rientranti|rientranti]] di ottima qualità, molto simili a quelle della [[Montblanc]]. Anche il logo dell'azienda, costituito da un cerchio suddiviso in quattro spicchi di colore alternato bianco e nero richiama molto, se non altro per il contrasto di colore bianco e nero, quello dell'azienda da cui Ilgner proveniva.
