Si indica con ''"sezione"'' (''section'' nel mondo anglosassone) il blocco finale della punta della penna, quello in cui sono inseriti pennino ed alimentatore. In figura sono illustrati i tre tipi più comuni di sezione presenti su penne antiche, corrispondenti a tre diversi tipi di caricamento; per maggiori dettagli su questa tipologia si rimanda alla pagina su ''"[[tipi di sezione e riparazione]]"''. Una ulteriore nomenclatura relativa alla sezione è quella del cosiddetto ''"collare"'' (''"nipple"'' nel mondo anglosassone) presente solo su alcuni tipi di sezione (nella figura i tipi 1 e 2) usate su penne il cui [[sistema di caricamento]] richiede la presenza di un sacchetto, che viene appunto incollato sul collare.
