Case back
Although it is not as widespread and common as the other elements dealt with so far, many models have, usually associated with their loading mechanism, a case back that covers the rear part (understood in relation to the nib) of the body of the pen. This element is not always present, as for many pens the back end is simply part of the shaft of the pen.
In vari casi un fondello è presente solo per motivi estetici e decorativi e può riportare a sua volta decorazioni specifiche o iscrizioni, come il numero del modello, ma è fisso. In altri casi serve per coprire l'accesso al sistema di caricamento (è comune nel caricamento a pulsante di fondo) e può essere staccato, in genere svitandolo per accedere al meccanismo. Infine il fondello può costituire direttamente una parte del sistema di caricamento stesso (per caricamenti come lo stantuffo o la siringa rovesciata) in cui in genere riveste il ruolo della parte del dispositivo meccanico su cui si deve agire per attivare il caricamento.
