Inizialmente si trattava semplicemente di un cilindro di ebanite opportunamente smussato nella parte anteriore posta sotto il pennino per lasciare spazio per la scrittura, dotato sulla parte superiore del ''"[[canale]]"'' di alimentazione attraverso il quale l'inchiostro arriva dal serbatoio al pennino. Le prime variazioni si ebbero proprio nella costruzione del canale (e nella aggiunta di ulteriori scanalature all'interno per favorire il passaggio dell'inchiostro per capillarità. Attraverso lo stesso canale (anche se in seguito sono stati previsti anche possibili percorsi alternativi, scorre l'aria che subentra all'inchiostro che esce dal serbatoio della penna.
