Explanation of the diagrams on Plate 1 which depict the pen assembled and in its details (the same letters denote the same parts in the different diagrams).

Fig. 1 shows the pen closed up in its case and ready to be placed in the pocket like a pencil. It consists of a tube A taken from an ordinary large swan quill of the sort used for making paintbrushes intended for map notes. At the end of this quill tube is fitted a little tube B in thin metal, whose end is threaded on its exterior, and which screws into a cap C, closed on top. The lower end of the tube A is fitted into the upper part of a little tube of thin metal shown in Fig. 2, which has three different diameters D, E, F. The upper part D receives, as we will explain, the lower end of the quill tube A, the lower diameter [step] E is a friction fit with the goose quill G, which is cut like an ordinary quill pen and which can be replaced as desired either by a quill of the same nature or by a metal nib. The middle diameter [step] E is a friction fit, a bit tight, with the end of the cap H, in metal, which covers the quill point G when one no longer wishes to write. At the bottom of this cap is soldered the base of a long needle I whose point, when one caps the nib after having written, goes into the end of the quill G and fits into a little hole of the same diameter as the needle's point drilled in the center of the base of the little end of tube F, to stop the ink from escaping.

In this fountain pen [plume sans fin], the quill tube serves as the reservoir, into which the ink is introduced through the end of the quill, all that is necessary is to unscrew the little cap C.

The advantages of this pen over those already existing for the same purpose, being that the tube A is of quill rather than of metal or glass, the instrument is by this means much lighter, less breakable, and to make the ink arrive at the point of the nib, it is not necessary to shake the pen, which is very inconvenient, all that is required is simply to squeeze the tube A with the fingers and the ink will in this manner be made to flow in greater quantity through the little hole drilled in the center of the base of the little holder F, fig. 2. This method also remediates any problems arising from temperature differences between the metals.

Il brevetto è stato archiviato con il numero 3208, che non è il numero del brevetto, ma solo una numerazione interna dell'amministrazione, in Francia infatti prima del 1844 i brevetti non avevano alcun numero.

Patent for a fountain pen, the first one known. Registered by Petrache Poenaru, student at that time, with the French name of Pierre Poyenar. The number 3208 is not the patent number, but an internal administrative number, in fact before 1844 French patent were not numbered.

Description d'une plume sans fin portative ou plume à ecrire perfectionnée qui porte son encrier et qui s'alimente d'encre d'elle même. Par M. Pierre Poyenar demeurant a Paris, Rue de Tournon n. 17.

Explication des figures SL 1ere qui representant cette plume dans son ensemble et dans ses details (les même lettres representant les même objects dans les differentes fig.).

La fig. 1ere represente cette plume renfermée dans son etui et disposée pour etre mise dans la poche comme un crayon. Elle est formée d'un tube "A" prise dans une grosse plume ordinaire de cygne pareille à celle dont on ce sert pour la confection de pinceaux au lavis de plans.

A l'extremitè de ce tuyau de plume est ajuste un petit tube "B" en metal mince dont le bout, qui est taraudé exterieurement, est vissè dans un étui "C", bouché par le haut. L'extremitè inferieure du tuyau "A", est ajusté dans la partie supérieure d'une petit tube de metal mince représenté fig. 2 portant trois diametres differents "D", "E", "F". La partie supérieure "D" recoit comme nous venans de le dire, l'extremité inferieure du tuyau de plume "A", le diametre inferieure "F" recoit à frottement le bout de plume d'oci(?) "G" qui se taille comme une plume ordinaire et qui se rechange à volonté soit par une plume de même nature, soit par une plume metallique. La diametre moyen "E" recoit à frottement un peu dur le bout d'un etui "H", en metal destiné à renfermer le bout de plume "G", lorsqu'on ne veut plus ecrire. Au fond de cet etui est soudeé la base d'une long aguille "I" dont la pointe, lorsqu'on renferme la plume apres avoir ecrit, s'engage dans le bout des plume "G" et delà dans un petit trou de diametre de la pointe de cette aiguille (?) pratique au centre du fond du petit bout de tube "F", pour empecher l'encre de descentre.

Dans cette plume sans fin c'est le tuyau de plume "A" qui sert d'encrier, l'encre y est introduite par le bout de la plume, il suffit pour cela de devisser le petit etui "C".

Les avantages de cette plume sur celles qui existent pour le meme object consistent dans le tuyau "A" qui est en plume au lieu d'etre in en metal ou en verre, l'instrument est, par ce moyen beaucoup plus leger, moins fragile e pour forcer l'encre d'arriver au bec de la plume il n'est pas necessaire de secouer , ce qui est sujet a bien des inconveniens, il suffit simplement de presser le tuyau "A" avec le doigts l'encre refoulée de cette maniere passe en plus grande abondance par le petit trou pratiqué au centre de la base de la petite capacité "E" fig. 2.
