The company's origins date back to the activity of Nisbet MacNiven that in 1770 founded a factory in Balerno, near Edinburgh, the city where activities on stationery production were transferred in 1788. In 1840 John and Donald Cameron joined the company that became the MacNiven & Cameron Ltd. Duncan Cameron is credited with the design of the Waverley nib produced by Gillot Steel Pens since 1864 and roughly until the mid-70s of the 19th century. The company acquired a factory in Birmingham in 1900 and continued to produce nibs working in the stationery products market up to the closure of the factory in 1964.
L'azienda entrò nel mercato delle stilografiche negli anni '10 (almeno dal 1916, come testimoniato dalla pubblicità in figura, ed un brevetto, nº US-940509, è del 1908), e fu attiva anche sul mercato francese. Dalla solita pubblicità si evince la presenza di una sede principale a Londra con filiali a Glasgow, Edimburgo e Parigi.[1] Un nome di modello (presente in un altro volantino) noto è Guinea Pen, dalle foto invece emerge un modello con caricamento a levetta denominato "Cameron N.4".
Le stesse penne erano distribuite in Francia alla fine della prima guerra mondiale con il nome S.A.R. Cameron (dove comunque S.A.R. non è altro che l'acronimo di Safety Auto Remplissage) da Kirbie, Bird and C. con sede in Rue Auber, 5 a Parigi. L'azienda pare rimasta attiva fino al 1964, anche se chi riporta una fine della produzione precedente.
