La [[Carter]] venne fondata nel 1858 a Boston da ''William Carter,'' un cartolaio che iniziò a commercializzare con marchio proprio inchiostri prodotti da altri, passando in seguito alla produzione. L'attività ebbe un grande successo, tanto che nel 1884 la [[Carter]] era divenuta il primo produttore mondiale di inchiostri; pochi anni dopo, nel 1888, la [[Carter]] si trasformò in società di capitali con il nome di ''Carter's Ink Company''.
